Summary: This is a short piece about a candle and what it made me think about one summer afternoon.
My Favorite Candle
I love candles. I have many around my room, each with its own sentimentality. I chose my favorite one to write about. It’s in a tall, elegant jar, looking more like something you would drink out of rather than hold wax.
The smell is already beginning to fill the room. I love that smell. It's called “English Toffee” but it’s really more of a vanilla, type smell. It’s like my mother’s kitchen the week before Christmas, when I bake all the cheese cakes for the various dinners we go to. I don’t know when baking the cheesecakes became my job. Maybe the year I decided to bake two dozen mini cheesecakes in both regular and chocolate. Yes, it smells something like that. Like something sweet baking in the oven.
The large flame moves with ghost like ripples, as if trying to touch the round sides of the jar.
It’s sending puffs of black smoke high into my breathing air, which is bad for my asthma. My chest is growing tight and I’ll need to blow it out soon. I can see I’ve let the wick go too long.
The heat from the flame is warming my face, a strange contrast to the fan blowing at my feet.
To me, fire is like a beautiful, untamable beast. It gives warmth and takes life. It cooks our food and destroys it. This unbiased and unfeeling creature, gives light and plunges some into darkness. No wonder so many are fascinated by its beauty and power. And yet there it moves delicately beside me, as if its only want is to touch the side of that jar.
